You've seen first-hand that the cycle of state revenue shortfalls and budget crises we're experiencing on a regular basis just isn't working for Washingtonians. For starters, we're advocating that Big Oil corporations pay their fair share of windfall profits in taxes to help ease the strain of high fuel costs on the rest of us. Longer range, we're looking at restructuring Washington State's tax system so that the amazingly wealthy don't pay 3% of their income in state and local taxes, while middle income families pay 11% and low-income families pay a whopping 17%. We want a system that's fair and adequate, so that we aren't flush some years and scrounging others to find enough revenue to meet basic public needs.
